Michigan Cannabis Packaging and Labeling 101

Cannabis packaging and labeling requirements vary across markets and product types, so it’s critical that your packaging and labeling are compliant with state-specific regulations.

What information needs to be on marijuana product packaging in Michigan?

Before marijuana, marijuana-infused products, or edible marijuana products are sold or transferred in Michigan, the container, bag, or product holding the marijuana must be labeled with the following information:

  • Name and the state license number of the producer and tag and source number

  • Name and the marijuana license number of the licensee that packaged the product

  • Unique identification number for the package or the harvest, if applicable

  • Date of harvest, if applicable

  • Name of strain, if applicable

  • Net weight in United States customary and metric units

  • Concentration of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) as reported by the laboratory after potency testing along with a statement that the actual value may vary from the reported value by 10%

  • Activation time expressed in words or through a pictogram

  • Name of the laboratory that performed passing compliance testing on the product in final form, and any test analysis date

  • Universal symbol for marijuana product

  • Warning statements about driving under the influence, poison control, keeping out of reach of children, whether the product is for adults or registered qualifying patients, and dangers surrounding pregnancy

A producer must label marijuana-infused and edible marijuana products with the following additional information

  • All non-marijuana inactive ingredients

  • Name of the marijuana-infused product that includes a product modifier such as “marijuana product,” “THC product,” or “cannabis product” using the same or larger font than the product name

  • Ingredients, including excipients and diluents, of the marijuana-infused product, in descending order of predominance by weight

  • Date the marijuana product was produced

  • Net weight or net volume of the product

  • Milligrams of THC per serving

A producer must also label all edible marijuana products with the following information:

  • Allergen labeling

  • If any health or nutritional claim is made, appropriate labeling as specified by the federal regulations

  • Date the marijuana product was produced

  • Product expiration date

What are other Michigan marijuana product packaging requirements?

In addition to the labeling requirements listed above, marijuana-infused and edible marijuana products have additional packaging requirements, including:

  • Packages and shapes of products must not appeal to minors aged 17 years or younger. This applies to the use or association of any cartoons, caricatures, toys, designs, shapes, labels, and fruits. Products that are geometric in shape and simply fruit flavored are permissible

  • Edible marijuana products must not be easily confused with commercially available food products, such as candy. The use of the words “candy” or “candies” is prohibited

  • Edible marijuana products must be in opaque, child-resistant packages or containers that meet the effectiveness specifications in the Federal Poison Prevention Packaging Standards

  • Edible marijuana products containing more than one serving must be in a resealable package or container that meets the effectiveness specifications outlined in the Federal Poison Prevention Packaging Standards

  • Edible marijuana products containing multiple flavors in a single package are not permitted. Producers may bundle packages of various flavors, so long as each flavor is treated as an individual product

  • Products are prohibited from including any statement that would mislead a consumer, such as nutritional or health-related statements that are not substantiated

If marijuana operators do not follow MRA’s guidance, the MRA can issue a fine or suspend the retailer’s license, depending on each circumstance. For tips on resolving non-compliant packaging, read “How to Fix Non-compliant Michigan Cannabis Product Packaging.”
