California Assembly Unanimously Approves Bill to Create Psychedelics Workgroup and Prepare for Legal Therapeutic Access

California lawmakers recently gave a green light to a bill that could change how people deal with mental health problems. This bill, created by a Republican assembly member, would set up a group to look into the rules for using psychedelic drugs like psilocybin and ibogaine for treatment. If the California legislature put in place a regulatory framework as recommended by the workgroup, therapists will eventually be able to give these drugs to patients in a safe and controlled setting, following these new guidelines. Read more.

Maine

Maine Senate Passes Bill To Create Psychedelics Commission That Would Explore Regulated Access

Maine lawmakers have advanced an amended bill to establish a commission tasked with studying and making recommendations on regulating access to psychedelic services. The legislation was significantly watered down, as it initially would have legalized psilocybin. The 13-member panel would consist of legislative appointees, health experts, a military veteran, academics and people with experience in psychedelics policy. Read more.

Missouri House Approves Budget Bill With $10 Million To Research Psilocybin As Treatment For Opioid Addiction

Last week, Missouri’s House of Representatives gave final approval to a budget bill that would spend $10 million from state opioid settlement funds to study the use of psilocybin to treat opioid use disorder. Read more.

Utah

Utah Psychedelics Pilot Program Bill Becomes Law

The Republican governor of Utah has allowed a bill to become law without his signature that authorizes a pilot program for regulated access to psilocybin and MDMA as an alternative treatment option. Under this pilot program, psilocybin and MDMA may be administered by certain hospitals and universities. Read more.

DEA Agrees to Hold Hearing on Proposed Ban of DOI and DOC

After pushback from researchers, the Drug Enforcement Administration has scheduled an administrative hearing to get additional feedback from experts amid its renewed push to schedule 2,5-dimethoxy-4-iodoamphetamine (DOI) and 2,5-dimethoxy-4-chloroamphetamine (DOC) as Schedule I drugs under the Controlled Substances Act (CSA). Read more.

This legislation is a cornerstone in the fight against the escalating mental health crisis and its resultant increase in suicide rates and pharmaceutical overdoses within the veteran community.
